Your mattress is only as good as its foundation, so it’s important to make sure you choose the right base to support your mattress through years of nightly use. We have an impressive collection of foundations to chose from, in every standard mattress size from Twin to California King. For large beds, we also offer mattress foundation sets that are easier to squeeze through narrow hallways and door frames to make setup a snap. Browse our selection by size, color or manufacturer to get the perfect match for your new mattress.
Should You Buy a Mattress Foundation Set?
The main difference between a single mattress foundation and a foundation set is portability. Foundation sets are available for King size mattresses, including the standard or Eastern King size, as well as California King mattresses. Because foundations are stiff and not able to bend like the mattress you sleep on, it can be very difficult to move a large foundation through doorways and stairwells for installation. To make sure your foundation fits, a foundation set splits the base into two equal pieces. When you set it up, simply place the two parts of the base next to each other, fasten any stabilizing clips and put your King mattress on top for a perfect fit that’s easy to move.
For smaller mattresses, a foundation set typically isn’t necessary, as you can fit a more narrow foundation or box spring through entryways with ease. Still, it’s a good idea to measure your space before choosing a mattress or bed size to make sure your house will accommodate your preference. For reference, see the standard mattress sizes below:
- Twin: 39 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Twin XL: 39 inches wide x 80 inches long
- Full: 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
- Queen: 60 inches wide by 80 inches long
- King: 76 inches wide by 80 inches long
- California King: 72 inches wide by 84 inches long
Tips for Buying the Right Mattress Foundation
Size matters when it comes to mattress foundations. First, you’ll want to make sure the foundation is the same size as your mattress. If you’re not sure what size your mattress is, measure it and compare it to the dimensions above so you can choose an appropriate match.
The foundation will also affect the overall height of your sleeping surface. Consider the height of your bed frame, your mattress thickness and the thickness of your foundation to get a sense of how tall your final bed will be. Once you know approximately how tall you’d like your bed to be, choose a foundation thickness that will help you reach the desired height.
