Can I use without a box spring if I want more of a platform-style bed?
You will need some type of foundation for the Dean Charcoal Eastern King Upholstered Panel Bed. If you do not the mattress can sink through the gaps in the slats. We recommend a Bunky Board or Low Profile foundation as an alternative with lower height.

What box spring thickness would I need so that a mattress sits flush with the top of the side boards?
The box spring pictured in the first image is a little too tall because you can still see it. What measurement would be shorter but not cause the actual mattress to sit below the side boards?

Love the bed. Great bed for cheap price.
The package arrived in great condition. Very easy to assemble. It took me 45 minutes only. The quality of wood and cloth is really good. The bed has enough height for our robo vacuum to clean under it.

Sleek-modern-neutral = relaxing bedroom!
I ordered the Kit-Dean bed frame in gray for my new apartment, and it's great. I use a low-profile box springs, and this bed frame allowed for the bed to be lower in height for my small dog to jump up easily without simply putting the box springs directly on the floor. The neutral gray is a relaxing color for me, and the slightly padded fabric frame doesn't bruise if you bump a corner (which I am prone to do).

Love everything about this bed and the price point. So sturdy and was easy to put together. Does not make a sound. The grey upholstery color Is the perfect grey and would hide any dirt.
